I Will Be Chief Campaigner of Ghana Sports Fund- Otumfuo

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has willingly assumed the role of chief campaigner for the Ghana Sports Fund.

By this, Otumfuo intends to assist the body in mobilising resources for the sports development in the country.

The King assumed the role on May 13, 2026, committing to use his influence to encourage institutions, individuals, organisations and groups to donate to the Fund.

“I will be the chief campaigner because I love sports. Anything we can do will be done to help Ghana’s sports,” Otumfuo said when the Governing Board of the Fund visited the Manhyia Palace in Kumasi on May 13, 2026.

Aside from its financial prospects, His Majesty noted that sports also have health benefits as they keep the body active and healthier.

State of Ghana Sports
Otumfuo could not agree more that sports do well to unite all Ghanaians, as he observed that sports have, over the years, been reduced to football with little focus given to other disciplines.

He also expressed worry over the current state of the sector as he recalled its thriving days and the number of athletes it spotlighted.

His Majesty cited lack of sustainable funding, lack of infrastructure and poor conditions of service for athletes for the current state of the nation’s sports.

The King also recommended a ‘catch them young’ approach to fish out the country’s talents from schools and communities, and the development of sports infrastructure to support these talents.

Deductions
The King also called for dedicated deduction sources for the Sports Fund, noting that donor fatigue might set in when its main source of funding is dependent on donations.

“I haven’t yet gone through the Act, but I believe we cannot solely depend on donations because donor fatigue will stifle the whole agenda. Dedicated deduction sources will make it more sustainable.”

Courtesy Call
The Chairperson of the Ghana Sports Fund, Prof. Koryoe Anim-Wright, led a delegation to seek the blessings and authority of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for an initiative aimed at mobilising resources for sports development.

The agenda covers athlete development, grassroots sport, sports infrastructure, capacity building, and high-performance preparation.

The Fund says the support will strengthen Ghana’s ability to nurture talent and compete at the highest level.
