Ghana Sports Fund Can’t Solely Depend on Donations – Otumfuo

The Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has cautioned that the Ghana Sports Fund cannot survive on donations alone.

His Majesty has thus called for dedicated deduction sources to make it financially sustainable.

Otumfuo, in his remarks to the Governing Council of the Fund, said reliance on donor support risks stalling the fund’s agenda.

“I haven’t yet gone through the Act, but I believe we cannot solely depend on donations because donor fatigue will stifle the whole agenda,” he said.

The King stressed that a consistent and predictable funding stream is essential if the Sports Fund is to deliver on its mandate.

“Dedicated deduction sources will make it more sustainable,” he stated.

Otumfuo’s remarks add to ongoing discussions on how to finance sports development in Ghana sustainably.

The Chairperson of the Ghana Sports Fund, Prof. Koryoe Anim-Wright, led a delegation on May 13, 2026, to seek the blessings and authority of Otumfuo Osei Tutu II for an initiative aimed at mobilising resources for sports development.

The agenda covers athlete development, grassroots sport, sports infrastructure, capacity building, and high-performance preparation.

The Fund says the support will strengthen Ghana’s ability to nurture talent and compete at the highest level.
