Health Ministry Launches Initiative to Expand Medical Oxygen Access in Ghana

The Ministry of Health has launched a new initiative to expand access to medical oxygen across Ghana, with a focus on improving availability in underserved regions.

The initiative was officially unveiled on Tuesday, June 17, at a stakeholder meeting convened by the Ministry.

The meeting brought together representatives from government institutions, regulatory agencies, development partners, and industry stakeholders to coordinate implementation.

Implemented with support from the Clinton Health Access Initiative (CHAI), the project aims to strengthen Ghana’s entire oxygen ecosystem.

Key areas include production and distribution, regulation, clinical use, data systems, and sustainable financing.

Health officials said the goal is to improve access to life-saving medical oxygen and address gaps that have historically limited care, especially outside major urban centres.

Stakeholders at the meeting pledged collaboration on standards, supply chain improvements, and monitoring to ensure hospitals and clinics can reliably access oxygen when needed.

The Ministry is expected to roll out specific implementation plans and timelines in the coming months.
