Health Minister Orders KATH Board to Suspend CEO Over Emergency Admissions Announcement

The Minister for Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has directed the Board of Komfo Anokye Teaching Hospital to suspend the Chief Executive Officer, Dr. Paa Kwesi Baidoo, for two weeks with immediate effect over the announcement to suspend admissions of emergency cases.
In a letter issued pursuant to Section 36(1) of the Ghana Health Service and Teaching Hospitals Act, 1996 (Act 526), the Minister instructed the Board to suspend the CEO for a period of two weeks, effective immediately.
The CEO will be required to report to the Minister upon expiry of the suspension.
The directive follows an admission by the Chief Executive on Wednesday, June 4, 2026, that he acted contrary to the clear directives of President John Dramani Mahama when he caused the announcement on Wednesday, June 3, 2026, suspending admissions of new emergency cases to KATH.
The meeting was attended by the Chief Director, the Technical Advisor, and the Legal Advisor to the Minister.
The Minister also took note of an interview granted by the Head of the Public Affairs Unit of KATH to Channel One Newsroom on the matter of suspending admissions of new emergency cases.
The Minister said the announcement by the Head of Public Affairs was also contrary to the President’s directives.
The Board has been requested to undertake a thorough investigation to establish, on what authority, the Head of Public Affairs made those comments on Channel One Newsroom, and whether it was a management decision for him to grant the interview. Where necessary, appropriate sanctions should be applied.
He has since asked the Board to submit a report to it within two weeks.
