Govt to Evacuate Over 800 Ghanaians from South Africa, Pledges Full Reintegration Support

Foreign Affairs Minister Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa has assured Ghanaians awaiting evacuation from South Africa that the government will ensure their safe return and support their reintegration back home.

Speaking during a meeting with the group, Ablakwa said President John Dramani Mahama had directed him to convey that the government would not rest until all citizens were out of harm’s way.

“We are very happy that as a country, we have leaders who care about their people and who will go to every extent to protect the welfare, interest, the dignity and the safety of our compatriots,” the minister said.

“President Mahama says I should tell you that he is not going to rest until all of you are safe, until you are all taken out of harm’s way.”

He said over 800 Ghanaians had registered for evacuation and that the government would assist them back home.

The minister added that the exercise would go beyond evacuation.

According to him, President Mahama wants to ensure evacuees are fully integrated and supported to stand on their feet.

He said this while acknowledging the fact that South Africa had become a second home for some of them, where they had established businesses and professions.

The first batch of evacuees is expected in Ghana between May 26 and 29.
