GIADEC Signs €300m MoU with Italian Firm Danieli for Aluminium Foil Plant in Tema

The Ghana Integrated Aluminium Development Corporation (GIADEC) has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Italian engineering giant Danieli & C. Officine Meccaniche S.P.A, marking a major step in President John Dramani Mahama’s industrial transformation agenda.

The signing took place at the Residence of the Italian Ambassador to Ghana and commits Danieli to invest approximately €300 million in downstream aluminium infrastructure within the proposed Integrated Industrial Park in the Tema Heavy Industrial Zone.

The park is being developed by ARISE Integrated Industrial Platforms in partnership with GIADEC and Tema Development Corporation.

Under the MoU, Danieli will establish a state-of-the-art aluminium foil rolling plant with a projected annual output of 40,000 to 45,000 tonnes of value-added products across ten categories.

The products will target packaging, pharmaceutical, food service and industrial markets.

The firm will also build a Centre of Excellence for training, innovation and technical development in advanced aluminium processing, expected to serve as a regional hub for skills and technology transfer.

Speaking at the ceremony, Danilo Dreolini of the Danieli Group said the project offers Ghana a critical opportunity to convert natural resources into high-value manufactured exports.

Italian Ambassador to Ghana, Her Excellency Laura Ranalli, assured full support from her office, noting the MoU reflects deepening industrial cooperation between Ghana and Italy.

GIADEC Chief Executive Officer Mr Reindorf Twumasi Ankrah said the agreement signals a strategic shift toward a fully integrated aluminium value chain in Ghana.

“GIADEC will continue to partner with credible global firms to position Ghana as an emerging hub for advanced aluminium manufacturing in West Africa,” he stated.

The proposed plant’s location leverages proximity to VALCO’s smelting capacity, Tema Port and existing industrial infrastructure for efficient export-oriented production.

GIADEC projects the partnership will accelerate Ghana’s transition from raw bauxite exports to integrated aluminium production, drive industrial skills development and technology transfer, and create direct and indirect jobs while stimulating upstream and downstream clusters in Tema.
