Ghana’s Flooding Situation Needs Engineering Solutions – Otumfuo to KNUST Faculty

The Chancellor of the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) has called on the Engineering Faculty to find lasting solutions to Ghana’s perennial flooding.
Delivering a speech during the 75th Anniversary launch of the institution, the King of the Asante Kingdom acknowledged that recurring floods border on waste management and public education.
However, His Majesty emphasised that technical expertise must lead the way.
The Asantehene noted that, as a premier science and technology university, KNUST produces graduates equipped to tackle drainage design, urban planning, and waste disposal systems.
Otumfuo therefore stated that engineers are well positioned to provide practical, location-specific guidance on waste management and disposal sites.
His Majesty warned that the country risks being overwhelmed by floods if urgent action is not taken immediately.
“If it is still flooding and we still cannot control it, my engineers, please help me. It all borders on waste management and education, but I know that my engineers should be able to tell us where to dump what and where because we train people on these things. Please help me with that. Otherwise, the whole of Ghana is going to be engulfed by floodwaters.”
