Ghana Welcomes Church of Scotland Apology on Transatlantic Enslavement

Ghana has welcomed the apology issued by the Church of Scotland for its role in the transatlantic enslavement.

The Minster for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, described it as a step forward despite its timing.

“It’s always better late than never,” Ablakwa said in a Facebook post on Tuesday.

The Minister said Ghana looks forward to working with the Church at the Next Steps Conference scheduled for June 17-19, 2026, in Accra.

The conference will be hosted by President John Dramani Mahama.

The upcoming meeting follows the adoption of a Ghana-led resolution at the United Nations declaring the transatlantic enslavement as the gravest crime against humanity.

Officials said the conference is expected to bring together governments, civil society, religious bodies, and other stakeholders to discuss follow-up actions on the UN resolution and reparative justice.
