Ghana to Host High-Level Conference on Reparations

Ghana is set to host heads of state, policymakers, scholars and civil society actors for a consultative conference on reparations from June 17 to 19, 2026.

According to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the conference will be used to consolidate international momentum and shape a structured, inclusive and action-oriented global pathway on reparatory justice.

Participants will deliberate on key aspects of reparatory justice, including legal frameworks and implementation mechanisms.

They will also undertake a commemorative activity at Christiansborg Castle, Osu in Accra, a site of historical significance linked to the transatlantic slave trade.

The event is strategically scheduled to coincide with Juneteenth, symbolising solidarity with people of African descent.

The announcement was made by Minister for Foreign Affairs Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa while highlighting next steps after the United Nations declared the Trafficking of Enslaved Africans and Racialised Chattel Enslavement of Africans as the Gravest Crime against Humanity on April 29, 2026.

Addressing the Diplomatic Corps, the Minister described the adoption of the resolution as a historic milestone.

He said it represents a formal acknowledgement by the international community of the grave injustice of the transatlantic slave trade and its enduring consequences.

He added that the resolution marks a significant shift from denial to responsibility and constructive engagement.

He further underscored the importance of reparatory justice, including the restitution of cultural property such as artefacts, manuscripts and other heritage items removed from affected communities.

He noted that these are essential for restoring historical dignity, reclaiming cultural identity and addressing the legacy of injustice.

He emphasised that Ghana remains committed to engaging all partners in good faith, stressing that the process should be pursued in a spirit of cooperation and mutual respect.
