Finance Minister Files Tax Returns, Urges Compliance as Civic Duty

The Minister for Finance, Dr Cassiel Ato Forson, has called on all Ghanaians to file their tax returns promptly, describing tax compliance as both a legal obligation and a moral responsibility.

Dr Forson made the call on Thursday, April 30 after he and his deputy publicly filed their annual tax returns.

“We did so for a simple reason: leadership must be demonstrated, not declared,” the Minister said in a statement.

He commended Ghanaian taxpayers for their consistent support of the government over the years, noting that tax compliance sustains the state and makes national development possible.

“Paying taxes is a shared civic responsibility. It is the foundation of good governance and a cornerstone of national development,” Dr Forson stated.  “Public officials, professionals, businesses, and citizens are all equal before the law, and we must all comply.”

The Minister stressed that when each citizen pays their fair share, the tax burden is distributed more equitably and development is accelerated.

He noted that tax revenue funds schools, hospitals, roads, and security systems.

Dr Forson also praised the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA) for its work, particularly during Tax and Good Governance Month in April.

He said the initiative provides an important platform to educate, engage, and encourage voluntary compliance.

The Minister urged the GRA to intensify public education and continue ongoing reforms to simplify processes, reduce compliance costs, and improve transparency.

“The Ministry of Finance stands ready to support the GRA in fully delivering on its mandate,” he added.

Dr Forson encouraged persons yet to file to do so promptly, advising them to seek guidance where necessary and take advantage of digital platforms and support systems available.

“A strong tax culture strengthens economic stability, deepens accountability, and builds a fairer society,” he said.  “Let us work together, through compliance and integrity, to build a more transparent, resilient, and prosperous Ghana.”
