Ghana Card Validity Remains 10 Years- NIA

The National Identification Authority (NIA) has clarified that the Ghana card remains valid for ten years.
According to the Authority, there are no proposed amendments to reduce the duration of validity.
“The NIA wishes to state clearly that no such amendment has been made or proposed. The Ghana Card remains valid for ten (10) years from the date of issuance, after which it must be renewed as required by law.”
The misrepresentation followed comments by the Executive Secretary, Mr Wisdom Kwaku Deku, at a recent media engagement.
In a statement, the Authority affirmed that his comments were misrepresented.
“He did not announce a change in policy. His remarks reflected a proposal that, given the rapid pace of technological advancement and the evolving uses of the Ghana Card, future reviews could consider a shorter update interval.
“This suggestion was to emphasise the need to keep the card responsive to technological changes, much like the decision to upgrade from the initial 2D barcode for children under 15 to today’s dual-interface, multipurpose biometric card.”
It furthered that the existing ten-year renewal requirement remains essential as the physical card has an estimated lifespan of ten years, and cardholders’ personal features are expected to change over that period, making an updated photograph and record verification necessary.
