Ashanti Regional Minister Warns Against Building in Waterways

Ashanti Regional Minister Frank Amoakohene has warned that building in waterways and on riverbanks poses a danger to communities and must stop immediately.
The warning follows an emergency meeting he convened this morning with key stakeholders to discuss measures to prevent and mitigate flooding after heavy rains across the region.
Mr Amoakohene said it is deeply concerning that some major riverbanks and waterways are being encroached upon through unauthorised filling activities and construction of buildings within flood-prone areas.
“Such actions pose a serious threat to lives, property, and the environment,” he stated in a Facebook post on June 15, 2026.
This afternoon, the Regional Minister, together with the affected Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies and the Spatial Planning Department, will visit selected areas of concern to assess the situation firsthand and take decisive action where necessary.
“Building in waterways is a danger to our communities and must stop. Let us all play our part in protecting our environment and safeguarding lives,” he urged.
