Ashanti Region Gets 1st Regional Police Mounted Squadron
The Ghana Police Service has established the country’s first regional police Mounted Squadron Unit in the Ashanti Region.
The squadron unit was temporarily deployed across all regions during the festive season; however, the Ashanti Region will maintain theirs, according to the Inspector-General of Police, Dr. George Akufo Dampare.
He disclosed this to Otumfuo Osei Tutu II during a visit accompanied by the members of the Police Management Board (POMAB).
“Horses were deployed into the Ashanti Region in the festive season. The horses will be maintained here to form the first regional Police Mounted Squadron,” he said during a courtesy call on January 12, 2024.
According to him, this initiative is in line with measures for which they have received the blessings of the Monarch.
In an exclusive interview with opemsuo.com, ACP Grace Ansah-Akrofi, the Director of the Public Affairs Directorate, said 10 horses are being used to establish the Unit in the region.
Welcoming the measure, Otumfuo offered his assistance in housing and protecting the horses.
Until now, the country held the only squadron unit – the National Squadron Unit – training horses at the National Police Headquarters in the Greater Accra Region.
Previously, the Unit was meant to train horses acquired by the Ghana Police Service (GPS) for ceremonial duties and for crowd control; however, they are now used for patrol purposes to ensure police visibility in towns and various areas.
