Otumfuo’s Sumankwahene Explains the Significance of Kuntunkuni Dae

The Asantehene’s Sumankwahene, Baffour Asabere Ababio Kogyawoasu, has shed light on the cultural importance of Kuntunkuni Dae in Asante tradition.

He explained that Kuntunkuni Dae is observed whenever the Asante Kingdom is in mourning, and during such times, the dress code for Akwasidae is altered to reflect the solemn mood.

Unlike regular Akwasidae celebrations where bright colours are common, Kuntunkuni Dae is marked by subdued attire, with darker tones symbolizing the somber period.

Baffour Asabere further emphasized his role, stating that as the Asantehene’s Sumankwahene, he performs his duties at every occasion in support of the Asantehene.

Maame Abena Antwiwaa, a member of the Nwomkoro group at Asarfo Ahenefie, also highlighted the symbolism of the attire.

She noted that wearing white or bright colors during Kuntunkuni Dae would be inappropriate, as such colours represent joy and celebration, which contradict the spirit of mourning.

She, however, clarified that chiefs celebrating Akwasidae in their various towns may wear brighter colors, but at Manhyia Palace, where the entire kingdom’s mourning is observed, the dress code remains strictly muted.

Asanteman is currently mourning the late Asantehemaa, Nana Konadu Yiadom III.
