A/R: Over 300 Youth From Tinker Island Drug Hub Rehabilitated, Minister Reveals

The Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council, in collaboration with national security agencies, has successfully supported the rehabilitation of more than 300 young people rescued from Tinker Island, a notorious drug haven within the region.
The social intervention was disclosed by the Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr Frank Amoakohene, during a high-profile briefing with the National College of Defence Studies.
The regional administration executed the massive rescue and rehabilitation program through a strategic partnership with the Ministry of the Interior, the Narcotics Control Commission (NACOC), and the Ghana Police Service, aiming to dismantle local drug syndicates while giving vulnerable youth a chance to rebuild their lives.
Dr Amoakohene emphasised that substance abuse remains a foundational driver for a majority of the security threats and social challenges plaguing the region.
While strict law enforcement operations and clinical rehabilitation are necessary to clean up existing drug dens, the Minister stressed that long-term societal safety relies on preventing addiction before it begins.
To scale up preventative measures, the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council announced a new partnership with the Ministry for Youth Development and Empowerment to roll out aggressive public education and awareness campaigns.
Dr Amoakohene further urged the country’s youth to prioritise their long-term potential over short-term substances by embracing personal purpose over drugs.
