A/R: Minerals Development Fund to Allocate Extra Resources for Roads in Mining Areas- Amoakohene

The Ashanti Regional Minister, Dr. Frank Amoakohene, has disclosed that the government will provide additional funding from the Minerals Development Fund to improve road infrastructure in mining communities across the region.

Dr. Amoakohene made the announcement during a working visit to Obuasi West and Obuasi East, in the company of the Chief Director of the Ashanti Regional Coordinating Council Mr. Michael Owusu Amoako Esq. where he inspected various ongoing government and District Assemblies Common Fund (DACF) projects.

“As mining areas, the government has taken a decision to make additional allocations under the Minerals Fund specifically to cater for roads in mining communities. This is in addition to 10km of roads allocated to each MMDA,” he noted.

The Regional Minister assured residents that the government is taking deliberate steps to tackle the poor state of roads in these areas.

During the visit, Dr. Amoakohene interacted with staff of both assemblies. He was led by the Chief Executives on a courtesy call to traditional leaders in the area. The DCEs also enumerated various ongoing projects in their respective Municipality.

Describing the Obuasi enclave as critical to the government, Dr. Amoakohene stressed the importance of regular field visits to monitor project implementation and evaluate developments on the ground.

He commended the Municipal Chief Executives (MCEs), Hon. Faustilove Appiah Kannin of Obuasi West and Hon. William Kofi Adzowu of Obuasi East as well as staff of the Assemblies for their dedication and commendable performance in executing projects.

Dr. Amoakohene reaffirmed the government’s commitment to decentralising development, revealing that 80% of the DACF has been disbursed to Metropolitan, Municipal and District Assemblies (MMDAs) with clear guidelines on expenditure.

He added that provisions have also been made for the development of markets to support the government’s 24-hour economy initiative.

The visit underscores the Regional Minister’s drive to promote accountability and fast-track development across the Ashanti Region.
