12 More Sanitation Offenders Convicted in Kumasi Within 24 Hours

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) has, within 24 hours, secured the conviction of 12 more sanitation offenders before the Prempeh Assembly District Court One for illegally dumping waste in the metropolis.

The court, presided over by His Worship Kwaku Ansah Akrofi, found the offenders guilty after they pleaded guilty to offences under Section 56(a & b) of the Public Health Act, 2012 (Act 851).

Each offender was fined 100 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢1,200.00, or face a 14-day prison sentence in default. They were also bound over to be of good behaviour for six months.

However, one offender, Kadija Dramani, 18, received leniency from the court due to her age and status as a stranger in the community. She was fined 40 penalty units, equivalent to GH¢480.00.

According to KMA Prosecutor, Mr. Enock Nkansah, the offenders were arrested by Metro Guards personnel for illegally dumping waste at several locations in Kumasi, including the MTN Roundabout, Otumfuo Roundabout, WAEC premises, and opposite the Zoo, between 11th and 12th May 2026.

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly has served notice that indiscriminate dumping of refuse is a punishable offence. The Assembly reiterated that offenders will continue to face prosecution as part of ongoing efforts to maintain cleanliness and public health in the metropolis.

Residents are encouraged to dispose of waste only at designated dumping sites and to cooperate with sanitation bye-laws to avoid arrest and prosecution.
