World Cup: Sweden’s Mattias Svanberg joins the substitutes who scored the fastest goals in World Cup history

At the Estadio Monterrey in Nuevo León, Mexico, Graham Potter’s team began their first Group F match against the Carthage Eagles of Tunisia.

Sweden played an opponent from the African continent for the sixth time at the World Cup and won for the fourth time against Nigeria, Egypt, Morocco and Tunisia.

Yasin Ayari of Brighton & Hove Albion got a brace; Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyökeres, and Mattias Svanberg were all on the score-sheet, while centre-back Omar Rekik got the consolation, which was an opening goal.

Brighton & Hove Albion’s Yasin Ayari scored twice, as did Alexander Isak, Viktor Gyökeres, and Mattias Svanberg. Maribor’s centre-back Omar Rekik scored the opening goal for the Cartage Eagles, but it was only a consolation.

Graham Potter made five substitutions, the second of which came in the 84th minute, when Jesper Karlström replaced Mattias Svanberg.

Mattias Svanberg scored 18 seconds after coming on, the second fastest goal by a substitute at a World Cup since 1966, trailing only Richard Morales’ 16-second strike for Uruguay against Senegal in 2002.

The list below is the ranked list of the quickest goals from substitutes in FIFA World Cup history:
1. Richard Morales – Uruguay – 16 seconds
2. Mattias Svanberg – Sweden – 18 seconds
3. Ebbe Sand – Denmark – 21 seconds
