Why Nearly 5,000 WASSCE Candidates’ Results Have Been Blocked

The West African Examination Council (WAEC) has issued a notice to the effect that 4,878 West Africa Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) candidates won’t be able to check their WASSCE results.

The notice was issued on Monday, December 18 when the WAEC released the results for the 2023 WASSCE.

The earmarked candidates are said to have failed to return learning materials belonging to their respective schools after graduating.

“The results of 4,878 candidates have been blocked for failing to return learning support materials supplied to them by their schools.”

To access their results, they are to contact their schools, WAEC directed.

Examination Irregularities
Meanwhile, some candidates who engaged in various examination malpractices have had either subject results or entire results cancelled while others have had their
results withheld.

The Council said candidates who sneaked foreign materials into the exam hall numbering 3,647 had some subject results cancelled with the entire results of 839 candidates cancelled for possession of mobile phones.

Additionally, subject results of 4,280 candidates and entre results of 1,005 candidates have been withheld for various offences.

The Council also reported that the results of candidates from 235 schools are under investigation for AI-generated answers and collusion.

The 2023 WASSCE results have been touted as the best since the beginning Free Senior High School policy of the Akufo-Addo-led government.

Data from WAEC showed that 73.11% of candidates had between A1 and C6 in English language, 62.23% in Mathematics, 66.82% in Integrated Science and 76.67% in Social Studies.
