Mahama Orders Audit Of Allocated, Leased or Sold State Lands During Akufo-Addo Era

President John Dramani Mahama has ordered a comprehensive audit into state lands that were allocated, leased and sold from 2017 to 2024.

This audit will cover lands acquired for schools, hospitals, and public institutions, forest and ecological zones unlawfully converted to private use.

It will also cover any transaction tainted by conflict of interest, abuse of power or political patronage.

“I’ve directed the Ministry of Lands and Natural Resources and the Lands Commission to immediately undertake a comprehensive audit of all state lands allocated, leased or sold, particularly between 2017 and 2024,” he said during the inauguration of the Lands Commission Board on September 2, 2025.

He stated that any transactions tainted by illegality or impropriety, as revealed by the audit, would be reversed and the land restored to the government in accordance with the law.

It comes after the lifting of a temporary ban on all state lands transactions following a thorough review of existing processes.

“That exercise has yielded valuable insights into the weaknesses of our current system and the urgent reforms that are required. Today, with the inauguration of the new Commission and the adoption of robust accountability measures, I’m pleased to announce that the ban on land transactions has been lifted.”
