V/R: Ammunition Haul Busted on Accra-Benin Bus

Police in the Volta Region have intercepted a major consignment of ammunition hidden aboard a commercial vehicle heading from Accra to Benin.

The discovery was made during a dawn operation on Friday, April 18, 2025, at the Tadzewu-Mitsrikasa Police barrier. Officers stopped a Hyundai passenger bus with registration number GR 8246-Q for a routine inspection.

Upon searching the vehicle, authorities uncovered a total of 132 cartons of ammunition — 60 cartons of AAA cartridges amounting to 15,000 rounds and 72 cartons of BB cartridges totaling 18,000 rounds.

The ammunition had been carefully stashed in sacks and buried beneath travelers’ luggage.

The driver, 45-year-old Abasou Fousseni, and his co-driver, 38-year-old Salisu Jalilu, were immediately taken into custody.

Although both men initially denied any knowledge of the smuggled items, police investigations later pointed to the co-driver as the one who had loaded the consignment.

After preliminary questioning, Fousseni was granted police enquiry bail to enable him to continue transporting the stranded passengers to their final destination.

Jalilu, however, remains behind bars and is assisting police with ongoing investigations. He is expected to appear before the court on Tuesday, April 22, 2025.
