Two Power Generation Units at Akosombo Restored After Fire Outbreak – Energy Minister

The Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Abdulai Jinapor, has announced the restoration of two power generation units at Akosombo following a fire incident that created a power distribution gap of over 1,000 megawatts.

The first unit was restored on Sunday, while the second was restored on Monday. Addressing the press on April 27, 2026, the Minister said about 280MW had so far been added to the national grid.

He noted that work on the third unit was ongoing and is expected to come on stream shortly to add another 140MW.

He expects all six units to be back in operation by the close of this week. The Minister used the occasion to commend the engineers working on the units.

“On behalf of the Government and the good people of Ghana, I wish to seize this opportunity to commend and salute our engineers and technical teams who have remained on site, working tirelessly under extremely difficult conditions to restore the system to full operation,” he said.

Jinapor described the incident as one of the most serious and unprecedented disruptions ever experienced in Ghana’s power and energy sector.

He explained that although all other plants have been running, the incident left a major deficit.

“The fire incident severely damaged the control room responsible for power evacuation. When power is generated from the hydro plant, it must first go to the control room. The control room then routes the power through the switchyard for distribution. So when you lose the control room, it means, at that moment, you cannot evacuate any power, thereby crippling a critical component of the transmission system and leaving over 1,000 megawatts of power stranded at Akosombo. Inevitably, it resulted in supply disruptions across the country.”
