Teacher Union Strike: Ministry Calls For Further Engagements

The Education Ministry has called for further engagements with the teacher unions for their demands to be met.

Four teacher unions; Teachers and Education Workers Union (TEWU), National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT), and Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT), Confirmed Teachers Ghana (CTG) began a nationwide strike yesterday over the government’s failure to provide the Cost-Of-Living-Allowances.

According to the Deputy Education Minister, Rev. Ntim Fordjour, the ministry requires the teacher union’s patience as well as continued engagement to get their requirements met.

“The reason behind the teacher’s strike which is the cost of living allowance is understandable but it’s a global economic crisis and everyone is aware of it, as a result, no country is standing straight.

“For that matter, with the request, we will depend on engagements and so we continue to plead with the teachers to exercise patience with us. Let’s not allow the schools to be affected.

He said the teacher’s bases for their strike is understandable yet the cause is a global phenomenon therefore expects further consultations with the unions for peace to prevail.

“In our hearts, we wish everyone would be pleased with their monthly salaries but it isn’t the case so in the midst of it all we ask that we continue with engagements with the teacher union. I ask that we continue the goodwill between you and the government.”
