Why High-performing BECE Candidates May Not Always Secure First-choice Schools

The Ministry of Education has provided insight into the placement of candidates, particularly into Category A high schools across the country.

In a statement, it noted that the placement is determined by raw scores, available vacancies, and competition levels.

As such, it said even high-performing candidates may not always secure their first-choice schools if competition and vacancy levels are high.

The Ministry reported that the Computerised School Selection and Placement System (CSSPS) Resolution Centre have received a total of 1,358 cases, the majority of which relate to school and residence changes.

In a breakdown, it said it received 1,100 requests for change of School, adding that approximately 76% of the requests involve movements from Category C and B schools to Category A schools, while 14% requested movement from B to B, and 10% from C to C.

It noted that while the Ministry of Education appreciates the strong interest of parents and guardians in Category A schools, placement is determined by raw scores, available vacancies, and competition levels.

It affirmed, “Genuine concerns brought to the Centre are being reviewed and addressed accordingly.”
