FDA Denies Inaction to “Cover-Up” Drug Case

The Food and Drugs Authority (FDA) has denied colluding with the police to cover up some drug cases.
This followed a news report on the Authority’s alleged inaction on a complaint on the activities of a purported peddler in 2020.
“The FDA has not and did not “cover up” any ‘Drug Case’ as purported by your headline. In view of the misleading nature of the story, we request that your paper immediately addresses the misrepresentations published and issue a formal rejoinder to correct the public record on this serious matter,” a letter to the Herald Newspaper said.
Addressing the said misrepresentations in the story, it confirmed that two complaints were filed at the head office of the FDA by one Nana Yaw Amoah Amofa on January 27, 2020, and March 5, 2020.
“The complaint in January 2020 was suspected unregistered /unlicensed products being marketed and sold on Instagram, precisely serum, organic hemp powder, CBD.”
In this regard, it said it immediately took steps to investigate the issue which led to the arrest of the supplier and suspect – Florence Ama Dadzie- by the CID officers of the Ghana Police Service stationed at the Nima Police Station.
“The suspect was then taken into police custody pending further investigation and prosecution by the Police. The FDA therefore, having followed due process, referred the matter to the Police for appropriate action to be taken,” it said in the letter.
With regards to the complaint filed in March 2020 on the Vaginne Feminine product, the FDA said it realized that the product being marketed had been duly registered by the Authority.
“This information was subsequently communicated to the Complainant in a Letter dated 16″ March 2020.”
