Mahama Shuts Door on 2028 Presidential Election

President John Dramani Mahama has ended speculation about his political future by confirming he will not contest the 2028 elections.

He explained that his decision to step aside after his current term is central to enforcing financial discipline and breaking the cycle of reckless election-year spending that has repeatedly damaged Ghana’s economy.

Mahama made the declaration during a three-day state visit to Singapore, where he held bilateral talks with President Tharman Shanmugaratnam.

He noted that, since he will not be seeking votes in 2028, he has no incentive to loosen fiscal controls for political gain—a trend that has historically led to post-election economic crises.

“I will not be a candidate in the next elections and therefore I can hold the line when it comes to fiscal discipline.”

The president also used the platform to highlight recent economic improvements under his administration, pointing to falling inflation, lower interest rates, and a stronger cedi as evidence of stability returning since his victory in the 2024 elections.

His remarks strike directly at opposition claims that he is secretly positioning himself for a third term. Leaders of the New Patriotic Party had accused him of planning to manipulate the constitution, but Mahama insisted that Ghana’s two-term limit remains intact.

Beyond politics, his discussions with Singapore’s president centered on expanding economic ties and attracting new investments to Ghana.
