Firearms, Excavators Scavenged From Abandoned Mpasaaso and Achiase Galamsey Sites
Firearms and excavators were left behind as illegal miners reportedly fled the Mpasaaso and Achiase illegal mining sites on Monday upon sighting security forces approaching.
The operation conducted by the Mankranso District Police Command, in collaboration with the Ahafo Ano Southwest District Assembly, was purposed at clamping down on illegal mining activities in the areas.
“During the operation, several illegal miners who were actively engaged in unauthorized mining activities fled the scene upon sighting the approaching security team, abandoning various items and equipment,” a statement by the police said.
Among the belongings of the miners which were left behind were one (1) CAL 9mm pistol loaded with three rounds of live ammunition; four pump-action guns;12 live BB cartridges; five live AA cartridges; and five excavators.
The five excavator machines have been impounded and transported to the Ahafo Ano Southwest District Assembly while the firearms and ammunition are in the custody of the Mankranso District Police Command.
The statement commended all officers and stakeholders involved in this successful operation.
It added, “We urge the general public to support law enforcement by providing credible information that will lead to the arrest and prosecution of persons involved in these illegal mining activities.”
