Gov’t to Announce Position on Constitution Review Report Next Week

The government will next week make public its official position on the Constitution Review Committee report following the conclusion of Cabinet deliberations yesterday.

Government Spokesperson, Felix Kwakye Ofosu, announced in a Facebook post that Cabinet had completed its session on the Government Position Paper prepared in response to the Committee’s recommendations.

According to him, the Attorney-General and Minister of Justice, Dominic Ayine, will publish the position paper and brief the public on government’s decisions next week.

The Constitution Review Committee was established to gather proposals for reforms to the 1992 Constitution and recommend changes to address challenges that have emerged over the past three decades.

The upcoming announcement is expected to clarify which of the Committee’s recommendations government accepts, rejects, or intends to subject to further consultation, and to set the tone for the next phase of the constitutional reform process.

Civil society groups, legal practitioners, political parties and other stakeholders have been awaiting government’s response to guide national debate on the proposed amendments.
