SC@150: Clarify Jurisdictional Boundaries Between Houses of Chiefs And Court- Otumfuo

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, has urged the judicial authorities to clearly define the jurisdictional boundaries between the Judicial Committees of the Houses of Chiefs and the regular courts.
His Majesty observed that overlapping and occasionally uncertain jurisdictional lines between regular courts and the Judicial Committees generate satellite litigation.
His Majesty said the precise limits of authority, particularly the Superior Courts’ supervisory and appellate roles, must be clearly defined.
“Greater doctrinal clarity is needed on the precise boundaries between the exclusive jurisdiction of the Judicial Committees and the jurisdiction of the regular courts,” His Majesty said while speaking at the second lecture of the Judiciary’s series marking the 150th Anniversary of the Supreme Court on July 16, 2026.
His Majesty noted that continued engagement between the Bench, the Bar, and the Houses of Chiefs is essential to achieving that clarity and avoiding conflicts in the administration of justice.
“Continued dialogues between the Bench, the Bar, and the Houses of Chiefs, of the kind this very occasion exemplifies are essential to that clarity,” His Majesty said.
