Quality Healthcare For Inmates Is Not A Privilege But A Fundamental Right- Reg Prisons Director

The Ashanti Regional Prisons Director and head of Kumasi Central Prison, Deputy Director of Prisons (DDP) James B. Mwinyelle, has emphasised that quality healthcare for inmates is not a privilege but a fundamental right and benefit.

“Quality healthcare for inmates is not a privilege but a fundamental right and benefit,” he stressed.

He made the statement at the Prempeh Assembly Hall in Kumasi during the launch of the Prisons Medicine and Equipment Bank on Thursday, June 25, 2026.

The initiative is aimed at improving healthcare delivery for inmates in the region.

The event was graced by the Director General of the Ghana Prisons Service, Mrs Baffoe-Bonney Esq. and guests from various sectors.

According to Mr Mwinyelle, there should be compassion and public support for the initiative to enhance the well-being of inmates by providing essential medical equipment and drugs.

“The Prisons Medicine and Equipment Bank is envisioned to become a coordinated, sustainable platform for mobilising, storing, managing, and distributing critical medical supplies across all prison facilities in Ghana,” Mr Mwinyelle emphasised.

Furthermore, the Deputy Director of Prisons revealed that many prison camps lack adequate essential health equipment, and drugs remain limited. He therefore called on the public to support the Prisons Medicine and Equipment Bank by donating needed healthcare equipment and drugs.

“Many prison camps lack adequate essential medical equipment and drugs,” he stated.

On his part, Kwamanhene Nana Debrah Boateng Bediako II, who chaired the event on behalf of Otumfuo, emphasised that inmates do not lose their rights to healthcare and dignity.

“Inmates do not lose their rights to healthcare and dignity,” he stated unequivocally. Nana Bediako II indicated that societal responsibility should not end at the prison gates.

According to him, the Prisons Medicine and Equipment Bank is a well-structured, practical system that creates a platform through which individuals can contribute meaningfully to improve healthcare delivery in prison facilities.

“The Prisons Medicine and Equipment Bank is a well-structured, practical solution to enhance healthcare for inmates,” Nana Bediako stated.

Nana Debrah Boateng Bediako II commended the leadership of the Prisons Service for introducing such a laudable initiative to support the well-being of inmates.

“The Prisons Medicine and Equipment Bank is a laudable initiative,” the Kwamanhene stressed.
