Police Arrest Convicted Fugitive 7 Years After Money Laundering Sentence

The Ghana Police Service has arrested Eric Afoakwa, popularly known as Chad, who was convicted in absentia and sentenced to eight years’ imprisonment by the Accra High Court for money laundering, defrauding by false pretences, forgery of official documents, and tax evasion.

Afoakwa was found guilty on five out of six counts in 2019.

The court, presided over by Justice Georgina Mensah Datsa, ordered that the eight-year sentence be served concurrently.

He was also directed to refund $132,660.00 to the complainant in the case.

Following the judgment, the convict went into hiding and evaded custody.

The Economic and Organised Crime Office (EOCO) subsequently declared him wanted and appealed to the public for information on his whereabouts.

On July 6, 2026, acting on the directive of the Inspector-General of Police, a team from the Anti-Armed Robbery Unit arrested Afoakwa while he was reportedly making arrangements to leave the country.

The Ghana Police Service says the convict will be handed over to EOCO to facilitate the enforcement of the court’s judgment.

In a statement, the Service reaffirmed its commitment to working with relevant state agencies to ensure that fugitives from justice are tracked down and made to face the full rigours of the law.
