A/R: Akatakyieso Residents Protest Alleged Takeover of Local Mining Concession By ‘Party Boys’

Residents of Akatakyieso in the Amansie Central District of the Ashanti Region have taken to the streets in protest over what they describe as an unlawful seizure of a local mining concession by government-aligned individuals.
The demonstrators, who staged a peaceful march, accused the government of forcefully taking over operations of Smart Micky Mining Company, a key source of livelihood for thousands in the area.
According to them, the company—headed by Mr. Michael Owusu—has been forcefully taken from its original management.
They alleged that the Deputy Ashanti Regional Security Coordinator, Captain Mohammed Jabari, and the ruling party chairman for Adansi Akrofuom, Chairman Gariba, led the move to oust Mr. Owusu and his workers from the site.
New managers have reportedly been appointed, with the residents claiming that proceeds from the concession are now being funnelled to the National Democratic Congress (NDC).
Mr. Jones Owusu, convener of the protest, appealed directly to former President John Mahama to step in and halt what he described as an abuse of power and resources.
He emphasized that the concession had significantly contributed to the community through numerous corporate social responsibility projects.
These include the construction of a police station, a chief’s palace, educational facilities, payment of school fees, healthcare support, and programmes for women’s empowerment.
Opinion leaders in the area have also appealed to the Asantehene, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, to intervene and help prevent unrest in the community by addressing the alleged forceful takeover.
The residents have vowed to continue voicing their displeasure until the original management of the company is restored and their concerns are addressed.
