Peace Council Calls for Calm Amid Rising Political Tensions Over Recent Arrests

The National Peace Council has expressed concern over rising political tensions following the recent arrests of some political actors for comments allegedly in breach of the law.

In a statement, the Council, mandated under Act 818 to prevent, manage and resolve conflict, called for calm and restraint from all sides.

It reminded Ghanaians that the rule of law, due process, and respect for constitutional rights under the 1992 Constitution are non-negotiable pillars of the country’s democracy.

The Council urged moderation, circumspection, and tolerance from actors in the media and public spaces.

The NPC called on security and judicial institutions to act with impartiality, transparency, and professionalism, and to ensure citizens’ rights and freedoms are upheld in the discharge of their duties.

It also urged political parties, communicators, and actors to refrain from making unsubstantiated or inflammatory statements and actions that could incite violence.

The Council further reminded political commentators, both at home and abroad, to be mindful of their utterances and their impact on national cohesion and stability.

“Ghana’s stability depends on our ability to disagree in our public discourse without resorting to abusive language or violence,” the NPC said, urging citizens to act responsibly and civilly in accordance with the law.

As part of its quarterly trust-building platform with political parties, the Council said it would hold a meeting in the coming days with party leadership to dialogue on lasting solutions and prevent further escalation.
