Consumer Protection Agency Urges Stronger Action on Unregistered Products After GSA Crackdown

The Consumer Protection Agency (CPA) has commended the Ghana Standards Authority for recent enforcement actions against substandard products, but says the problem remains widespread.

The CPA welcomed the GSA’s closure of a mattress factory using unapproved materials and its operation at China Mall to remove non-compliant goods from shelves.

It said the actions signal that regulatory enforcement is being taken seriously and help protect consumers while upholding the credibility of Ghana’s standardisation regime.

However, the Agency said its own market surveillance shows the issue persists.

Its task force has identified over 133 products currently on the Ghanaian market that are not registered with either the GSA or the Food and Drugs Authority before sale.

The CPA warned that unregistered products pose two urgent threats.

“First, they bypass mandatory testing and certification, exposing consumers to health and safety risks. Second, many are smuggled across borders, evading duties and taxes and creating unfair competition for compliant businesses.”

The Agency is calling on the GSA, FDA, Ghana Revenue Authority, and other state institutions to intensify joint enforcement and remove all non-compliant products from the market immediately.

It said consistent and visible action would deter illegal importers, protect consumers, and recover lost revenue for national development.

The CPA added that it is ready to collaborate with regulators by sharing surveillance data and supporting public education on product compliance.
