Parliament to Host 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family and Sovereignty

The Parliament of Ghana will host the 4th African Inter-Parliamentary Conference on Family and Sovereignty from June 3 to 6, 2026, at the Accra Ridge Church.

The high-level continental dialogue will bring together lawmakers, policy experts, academics, civil society leaders, and development partners from across Africa and beyond.

Participants will deliberate on emerging challenges facing African societies and the role of parliaments in shaping responsive, people-centred policies.

Held under the theme “Consolidating Parliamentary Consensus: Advancing the African Charter on Family Values and Sovereignty,” the conference will focus on strategic policy discussions around African cultural identity, family resilience, food sovereignty, data governance, technological transformation, and youth development in a digital age.

President John Dramani Mahama is expected to attend as the Special Guest of Honour.

His participation, Parliament said, underscores Ghana’s commitment to continental dialogue, democratic governance, and Africa-centred policy development.

Key plenary sessions will examine the impact of artificial intelligence and digital technologies on family systems, child protection, and social cohesion.

Delegates will discuss the need for ethical frameworks, data privacy protections, and responsible digital governance, as well as ways African states can safeguard citizens from harmful digital exploitation while using innovation to advance education, healthcare, and economic growth.

The conference will also address food security and agricultural sovereignty, highlighting the importance of resilient local food systems for Africa’s independence and long-term stability.

Another focus will be the preservation of African cultural values, indigenous knowledge systems, and identity amid globalisation and rapid social and technological change.

Participants are expected to explore strategies for strengthening family institutions, promoting values-based education, and empowering young people to contribute to national development while staying rooted in Africa’s heritage.

Parliament said the event will provide an opportunity for African legislators to deepen collaboration on governance, public policy, and continental integration, while reaffirming the role of parliaments in protecting the dignity, aspirations, and sovereignty of the African people.
