Why Feed Teacher Trainees when Basic Students Aren’t Fed? – Kofi Asare

Executive Director of Africa Education Watch, Kofi Asare, has questioned the prudence in feeding Colleges of Education students while basic school students do not enjoy such a privilege.

This is in reaction to Haruna Iddrisu, the Education Minister’s resolve to scrap the feeding allowance allotted to Teacher Trainees.

“Where lies the wisdom in GoG {Government of Ghana} feeding adult tertiary students in CoE when about 3 million public basic school children, including many in Tatale-Sanguli, are not fed?” he wrote on Facebook.

At a meeting with the Executives of Principals of Colleges of Education in Accra, the Minister explained that the policy did not align with global best practices in higher education.

He thus suggested a student loan policy as a replacement.

“There is no justification for feeding students at the tertiary level. We must transition from the allowance system to an enhanced student loan scheme to allow them to support themselves.”
