Get Export Documentation When Buying Gold in Ghana- Global Traders Told

The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board, Sammy Gyamfi, has encouraged international gold traders to get the requisite export documentation when buying gold in Ghana.
Under a new legal regime, he said the GoldBod is the sole and exclusive exporter of all ASM gold from Ghana; however, the metal could be purchased from large-scale mines.
“Please be informed that if you are not buying gold from a large-scale mine in Ghana, you must be buying only from the GoldBod. And if you are buying gold from a large-scale mine in Ghana, please ensure that export documentation includes an official Assay Report issued by the National Assayer – the Ghana Gold Board.”
He stated that defying these guidelines makes one either a gold smuggler or an abettor of gold smuggling, warning that the ‘laws will surely catch up with you.’
Addressing the 2025 Dubai precious metals conference, he recognised that gold smuggling had become a major fuel for money laundering, illicit financing and terrorism and suggested setting up a framework akin to the UN’s Kimberly Process to clamp down on it.
“Gold is a resource for global economic stability and transformation. It cannot be allowed to become a haven for drug lords, armed actors, corrupt politicians, human traffickers and criminal networks with destructive social consequences in our countries. We must nip this canker in the bud, and the time to do so is NOW!” he said while addressing the 2025 Dubai precious metals conference.”
“We believe that the time has come for a similar multilateral and international certification scheme for gold imports and exports. This will prevent smuggled gold from entering the global gold supply chain. We are confident that these steps will bolster our collective Anti-Money Laundering and Counter Terrorism Financing efforts.”
