Ghana Surpass Nigeria as Africa’s Most Successful FIFA World Cup Nation

Ghana etched their name into the history books on Wednesday after defeating Panama 1-0 in their opening 2026 FIFA World Cup match at BMO Field in Toronto.

The Black Stars secured their sixth World Cup victory in just 16 matches played, moving ahead of their West African neighbours Nigeria at the top of Africa’s all-time World Cup standings. The Super Eagles also have six wins but achieved that tally across 21 matches, giving Ghana a superior win percentage.

The landmark win came courtesy of a disciplined and determined performance against the Central Americans. Sensational Caleb Yirenkyi scored the only goal of the game late in the contest, tapping home from a Brandon Thomas-Asante cross to hand Ghana a vital three points.

Although Panama dominated large portions of the match, the Black Stars showed experience and resilience to weather the pressure and secure a narrow but precious victory.

Head coach Carlos Queiroz was full of praise for his players’ character and application after the game. The result gives Ghana a strong start in Group L as they prepare to face England next on Tuesday, June 23, at the Gillette Stadium.

This historic achievement will boost morale significantly as the four-time African champions look to progress beyond the group stage and make a deeper run at the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
