Ghana’s Veep Makes History With Her Speech At AU

Prof Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang, the Vice President of Ghana, has once again made history, having set numerous records in the country.
The former Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast made history with her speech at the 2nd Africa–CARICOM Summit, where she represented President John Dramani Mahama.
She became the first female Ghanaian Vice President to address the African Union in Ethiopia.
The historic gathering, under the theme “Transcontinental Partnership in Pursuit of Reparatory Justice for Africans and People of African Descent through Reparations,” reaffirmed shared commitment to justice, dignity, and accountability.
Her speech advocated for Support for the AU Commission of Experts on Reparations and the Global Reparations Fund, jointly established with CARICOM, to coordinate claims and mobilise resources.
It also placed emphasis on reparations as a multi-dimensional agenda, beyond financial redress, encompassing historical acknowledgement, land recovery, cultural renewal, policy reforms, and community empowerment.
The veep further made a call to progressive nations to join efforts to make reparations a global reality through diplomacy, legal frameworks, funding mechanisms, and moral responsibility and recognition of the Decade of Reparations, giving the continent and the diaspora a decisive window to deliver tangible outcomes.
She also announced a high-level reparations event on the margins of the UN General Assembly in September 2025, which will be co-hosted by Ghana and Togo.
