Okada LI: Reverse Age Requirement or Face Our Wrath- PRO

Okada riders are baring their teeth against the government over the new Legislative Instrument (LI) being drafted to amend the existing Road Traffic Regulations, 2012 (Legislative Instrument 2180) which bans motorcycles and tricycles.

By the LI, the government seeks to legalise their operations in the country.

As part of the provisions, riders must belong to a licensed commercial motorcycle or tricycle transport union; and be at least 25 years old.

Reacting to the age requirement, Solomon Akpanaba, the Public Relations Officer of Okada Riders Association challenged the age requirement, stating that it must be pegged at 18 years.

He argued that if an 18-year-old is capable of voting, they are similarly capable of riding a motorcycle and tricycle.

“The 18-year given to every Ghanaian to vote is assumed that the person is mature enough in terms of psychology, and emotion. This is embraced by many countries practising democracy. How come in our situation you need to be 25 years? While 18 years voted for John Mahama who was riding?” he said in an interview with GhOne TV.

“The same John Mahama administration is asking that person who voted for him to go and sit in the house and wait till he gets 25 years. I think these are enemies in disguise. They should come and explain to us what is in 25 years that is lacking in 18 years.”

He called for an immediate review of that provision, adding that they would not think twice about pouring onto the streets, initiating court action and subsequently voting the National Democratic Congress out of office.

“They should come and explain what a person who is 25 years old can do that the one who is 18 years old cannot do or they should reverse it. If not, we will demonstrate, send them to court and we will curse them. We will not curse them spiritually but when we are going for the next election.”
