Former GFA Vice President George Afriyie has called on the Black Stars to approach their upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup clash against England with confidence and self-belief.
Ghana will face England on June 23 at Gillette Stadium, fresh from a hard-fought 1-0 victory over Panama in their opening Group L match.
Caleb Yirenkyi’s late goal secured the win at BMO Field and significantly boosted the team’s morale heading into this tougher assignment. England, meanwhile, impressed with a 4-2 win over Croatia.
A victory for either side in this encounter could prove decisive in the race to advance from the group stage.
Speaking ahead of the high-stakes fixture, Afriyie drew inspiration from recent underdog performances on the global stage.
“We all know the pedigree of Portugal in international football, but if Congo can draw with Portugal, then Ghana can draw with England or even beat them,” he said.
We all know the pedigree of Brazil, and if Morocco can draw with Brazil, then it can happen in the Ghana-England game as well.”
He added: “Big names do not always guarantee results. We should not underestimate ourselves. England is beatable. These young boys are determined to make history.”
Afriyie’s message comes at the perfect time, encouraging the Black Stars and their supporters to back the team fully as they aim to create another memorable chapter in Ghana’s World Cup story.
