10% US Tariff: Govt Must Act Immediately – Oppong Nkrumah

Former Minister for Information, Kojo Oppong Nkrumah, has encouraged the government to take urgent actions in response to the sweeping tariff slapped at some African countries by the United States of America (USA).

He sees the need for immediate actions to mitigate the effect of the tariff which affects all Ghanaian exports.

The MP for Ofoase Ayirebi Constituency while expressing his sentiments mulled over the impact on businesses and livelihoods that rely on exports to America.

“The newly imposed 10% tariff on Ghanaian exports to the U.S. will undoubtedly increase costs for Ghanaian products in that market. Ghanaian goods risk losing their competitive edge,” the former Works and Housing Minister wrote on his Facebook wall.

“Will Ghana rise to the occasion, or will the budding businesses set up in the last decade that export to the American market be left to struggle under the weight of policies that threaten their survival?”

He thus suggested an engagement with the US for a waiver.

The lawmaker furthered, “The government must act immediately. A good number of our exporters, workers, and a decent part of our economy depend on it.

“The government’s much-touted 24-hour economy will rely on interventions like this to create the export space that will ignite the demand required for existing and new 24-hour businesses. The time to act and act swiftly is now.”

Meanwhile, the Minister for Foreign Affairs has a scheduled meeting with the US Ambassador to Ghana on April 7 over the tariff.

The tariff takes effect from April 5.
