Money Can’t Buy Chieftaincy- Asantehene

The King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II has asserted that chieftaincy was ordained for royals only and, therefore, cannot be bought with any amount of money as some have tried.

He notes that when bought, disputes are born.

The King posits that chieftaincy disputes are caused by dishonesty and an attempt to sway from customs and traditions in enstooling or enskinning traditional leaders.

“When done customarily, peace will prevail. Whether patrilineal or matrilineal, if the right order is taken, there won’t be litigation. All chieftaincy disputes boil down to dishonesty. Stools are for royals and money can’t buy,” he said while addressing the leadership of the Ministry of Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs.

He recalled some chieftaincy disputes in the Asante kingdom which were stoked by such dishonesty.

“At first, there was the Judicial Committee that settled these disputes corruptly. Because they took money and ruled in favour of the rich, the disputes persisted. When I came {enstooled}, I overturned all the rulings. With my ruling, the factions left my presence in making peace.”

This was during a courtesy call by the Minister for Chieftaincy and Religious Affairs, Hon Stephen Asamoah Boateng, and his leadership on June 14, 2023.
