Education: Obuasi Municipal to Get Exam Printing Centre

The Obuasi Municipal Education Directorate will, in the next few months, own an ultramodern Examination Printing Centre to improve the pass rate of students in the Basic Education Certificate Examination (BECE).

To this end, a brief sod-cutting ceremony has been held at the premises of the Obuasi Municipal Assembly to make way for the construction of the centre. It is expected to be completed in March 2024.

The cost of the project is being fully funded by the AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine as part of their corporate social responsibilities to their host communities at an estimated cost of GHC2.4 million.

Senior Manager in charge of Projects Services and Business Improvement at AngloGold Ashanti Obuasi Mine, Mr. Jacob Edmund-Acquah, speaking at the ceremony, said the project is in line with the 10-year Socio Economic Development Plan (SEDP) of the company, which was launched last year.

“This initiative, which is estimated to have an overall cost of about GHS2.4 million, falls under the education pillar of the Obuasi Mine’s 10-Year Socio-Economic Development Plan, aimed at improving quality education through educational infrastructure among other initiatives.”

Mr. Edmund-Acquah expressed optimism that the facility, when completed, will definitely improve the BECE results of students.

“Last year, the Obuasi Municipal had a BECE pass rate of 94%, and we are optimistic that through the construction of this Exams Printing Center and other education interventions we are implementing under the 10 Year SEDP, the pass rate will increase to 100%.”

He believes that “by investing in the education infrastructure, we not only contribute to enhancing Obuasi but also nurture the talents and potential of our students”.

On his part, the Obuasi Municipal Chief Executive, Hon Elijah Adansi Bonah, said he was excited having cut sod for construction of an Examination Printing Centre. He said it will ensure adequate preparation of BECE candidates and improve their pass rates.

Hon Adansi Bonah further indicated that over the years, the Assembly has been bearing the cost of examination printing and for that matter, the facility will lessen their burden.

He thanked AngloGold Obuasi Mine for the project.
