Kumasi Takes Bold Steps Toward Safer Roads with Stakeholder Workshop

The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly, KMA, is taking bold steps to make the city’s roads safer through collaboration, design reforms, and stronger stakeholder action, officials say.

KMA, in partnership with the Bloomberg Initiative for Global Road Safety (BIGRS) and the World Resources Institute (WRI), hosted the Safer Streets Workshop on Monday, June 30, 2026, under the theme: “Designing and Sustaining Safer Streets for All in Kumasi.”

“Kumasi is taking bold steps in that direction,” KMA stated. “Creating safer roads is a shared responsibility.”

Chaired by Nana Yaw Akuoko, Otumfuo Assinhene and Vice Chair of the KMA Road Safety Advisory Board, the workshop brought together road agencies, the Police Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), academia, and development partners.

Participants reviewed Kumasi’s progress under the BIGRS programme and discussed how to sustain the gains beyond the project’s lifespan.

They also examined findings from the Pedestrian and Motorcycle Safety Assessment, based on interviews and observations at some of the city’s busiest intersections.

The session included practical exercises on safer street design aimed at reducing crashes and protecting pedestrians, motorcyclists, cyclists, and other vulnerable road users.

KMA said it remains committed to building a city where every road user can travel safely.

“Together, we can create streets that save lives and serve everyone,” the Assembly added.
