Kumasi International Airport To Be Named After Prempeh I

The Kumasi International Airport envisioned to be completed in three months will be named after the 13th Monarch of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Agyeman Prempeh I.

This was divulged by President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo on Tuesday, February 27, 2024, during the presentation of the State of the Nation Address (SONA).

“A number of important tasks lie ahead of us, one of which will be commissioning the Nana Agyeman Prempeh I International Airport in Kumasi,” he said in confirmation of the name.

The airport is currently 98% completed, according to the government.

The President said though construction has stalled together with other ongoing projects in the country, priority has been given to the airport and thereby its transfer onto the Government of Ghana (GOG) budget within the same fiscal space.

By this, he said the airport will be completed in May 2024 for its commissioning.

“This will enable the Kumasi International Airport, which is some ninety-eight (98%) complete, to be completed by May.”

Prempeh I was the thirteenth occupant of the Golden Stool. He reigned from March 26, 1888, until his death in 1931, and fought an Asante war against Britain in 1893.

He was exiled along with his mother, Asantehemaa, Nana Yaa Akyaa in 1896 to Seychelles Island and returned in November 1924.

It will be exactly 100 years since he returned home this year and the move to name the airport after him could not be far from rational.
