Kufuor, Family Pay Appreciative Visit To Manhyia Palace

Former President John Agyekum Kufuor has paid an appreciative visit to the King of the Asante Kingdom, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II.

The visit was to express his profound appreciation to His Majesty for delegating representatives to the funeral rites of his late wife, Theresa Aba Kufuor and his attendance to her thanksgiving service.

The visit to the Manhyia Palace was undertaken by Mr Kufuor and his family on Monday, October 20, 2023.

Leading the delegation was Nana Kusi Agyekum Ababio, the Oyokohene who is also the father of Mr Kufuor.

Among the delegation were the progeny of the former President, family members from Mrs Kufuor’s side, former Minister for Defence, Mr Kwame Addo Kufuor, other relatives of the former President and traditional rulers.

In an interview with opemsuo.com, Ing Atta Poku who is a member of the Oyoko family said the visit was undertaken after Mr Kufuor underwent purification, as a widow or widower per traditions and customs of the Asante Kingdom cannot come near the King until purification has taken place.

The former first Lady passed away on October 1, 2023, at age 87, surrounded by family and loved ones at her residence at Peduase.

A state burial was conducted in her honour on November 16, 2023, at the forecourt of the State House in Accra with a final funeral rite on November 18, during which the King was represented.

On Sunday, November 19, during her thanksgiving service at St. Peter’s Cathedral in Kumasi, Otumfuo was accompanied by his wife, Lady Julia and some traditional rulers to the service.
