Keta Police Destroy Huge Consignment of Cannabis

The Keta Divisional Police Command has successfully destroyed 24 maxim bags of suspected cannabis at Adzido in the Keta Municipality, reinforcing its commitment to tackling drug trafficking in the area.
The contraband, intercepted on December 29, 2023, was incinerated on Friday, April 25, 2025, after months of investigation failed to link the abandoned shipment to any individuals.
The drugs were seized following a tip-off about suspicious activity along the Adzido beach.
Chief Superintendent Maxwell Agyemang, the Keta Divisional Police Commander, confirmed that each bag contained 30 carefully wrapped parcels, with an estimated street value of GH₵500 each.
In total, the destroyed cannabis is valued at approximately GH₵360,000.
“This seizure highlights the scale at which illicit drugs are being moved and our ongoing efforts to disrupt such activities,” he stated.
He recalled that in September 2024, a similar operation at the same location led to the destruction of 78 bags of intercepted marijuana.
Superintendent Agyemang noted that while the culprits remain unidentified, the police continue to investigate and urged the public to assist with information that could lead to arrests.
In response to the growing drug menace, the Keta Command is collaborating with the Municipal Chief Executive, Mr. Wisdom Seade, to launch educational programs aimed at raising awareness about drug abuse, particularly among school children.
Reports suggest increasing drug use among junior and senior high school students, involving substances like tramadol, tamaking, and cannabis.
Madam Elaina Annor-Agyapong, Senior Narcotic Drugs Control Officer at Aflao, who witnessed the destruction, warned about the devastating effects of drug addiction, including mental health issues, premature death, and imprisonment.
She urged young people to stay away from narcotics to safeguard their future.
The Keta Divisional Police Command reaffirmed its commitment to clamping down on illegal drug activities and called on the public to report any suspicious behaviour that could endanger the community.
