Including Andre Ayew in Ghana’s World Cup Squad Won’t Be a Bad Idea – Sports Minister

Minister for Sports and Recreation, Hon. Kofi Iddie Adams, has thrown his support behind veteran striker Andre Ayew’s potential inclusion in Ghana’s 2026 FIFA World Cup squad.
In an interview with Adom TV, the Minister said he sees no reason why the experienced forward should be left out if coach Carlos Queiroz considers him fit for the tournament.
“I don’t think it is a bad idea if Andre Ayew is named in the World Cup squad. I don’t know the coach’s plan or strategy, but if I were the coach and I had a player with the calibre of Andre Ayew, why not?”
Ayew spent the first half of the 2025/26 season without competitive action before joining Dutch side NAC Breda in January. He made 17 appearances for the club, scoring one goal in the Eredivisie before leaving following NAC Breda’s relegation from the top flight. His immediate club future remains uncertain.
Ghana have been drawn in Group L for the 2026 FIFA World Cup alongside Panama, England and Croatia. The Black Stars will open their campaign against Panama on June 17, before facing England on June 23 and Croatia on June 27.
As part of their final preparations, Queiroz’s side will play friendlies against Mexico later this month and Wales on June 2, with the final World Cup squad expected to be named soon.
The Minister’s comments have added to the growing debate over whether the 36-year-old veteran, who remains one of Ghana’s most respected players, should be given one last shot on the biggest stage.
