Gov’t Expresses Concern Over Resurgence of Xenophobic Attacks in South Africa

The government of Ghana has expressed grave concern over a resurgence of xenophobic violence in South Africa targeting African nationals, including Ghanaians, with the Minister for Foreign Affairs, Hon. Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, citing growing fear and intimidation in parts of KwaZulu-Natal Province.

Speaking at a press briefing on Monday, Hon. Ablakwa said since April 2026 there has been “a disturbing resurgence of anti-foreigner sentiment and intimidation” in the Republic of South Africa, particularly within the Durban Central Business District in KwaZulu Natal Province.

He attributed the attacks to the activities of civic groups known as “March and March” and “Operation Dudula.”

According to the Minister, the groups began with a pretext of “cleaning up the cities” but have evolved into unruly groups whose activities target African nationals “without any visible State hindrance.”

Hon. Ablakwa noted that members of the two groups have been observed stopping individuals in public places, questioning them about their nationality and immigration status, and in some instances engaging in “citizen’s arrests” of suspected undocumented migrants.

“These confrontations, many of which occurred in busy commercial areas, were widely shared on social media, creating an atmosphere of fear and uncertainty,” he said.

The Minister referenced viral videos of a Ghanaian national, Mr Emmanuel Akowuah Asamoah, who was threatened and intimidated by members of the March and March group.

He said the case attracted widespread attention in Ghana and across the African continent.

He added that other videos and reports on traditional and social media have shown many African migrants being subjected to harassment, intimidation and threats of violence, generating widespread concern among migrant communities and their families.

Hon. Ablakwa assured that the Government of Ghana is closely monitoring the situation and engaging relevant South African authorities to ensure the safety, dignity and protection of Ghanaian nationals living in South Africa.
